Self-Care Box

This post was inspired by the incredible Kylie from ‘Imma Eat That’. Check out her post here http://immaeatthat.com/2017/01/02/how-to-create-a-self-care-box/

As soon as I read Kylie’s blog post I knew I needed to create a self-care box as well. I already had a few self-care practices that I used regularly, but I loved the idea of having them all in the one place and ready to go when needed. I use my self-care box when I’m feeling overwhelmed or I’ve had a hectic week and need some time to myself.

What is self-care?

If you haven’t heard that term before, self-care is as the name suggests, an action used to take care of ourselves. It’s supposed to help with our mental, social and physical health. Self-care will be different for everybody so it’s important to find what works for you. I personally have a few different types of self-care. I have more practical things that I try to do daily or weekly that I know will help such as getting enough sleep, eating foods that make me feel good, exercise and spending time with people I love. Other people’s self-care might look like going to a therapist or doctor, planning out their meals for the week or taking a nap.

The items in my self-care box are things that I go to if I’m feeling a bit more worn out or want a specific activity that I know I’ll enjoy and will help me feel relaxed.

What’s in my self-care box?

  • Journal

I find writing is a really great way for me to unwind and reflect. Sometimes I’ll write what I did that day, or how I’m feeling or what I’m grateful for. I also love reading back what I’ve written previously.

  • Jigsaw puzzles and sudoku

I love jigsaw and sudoku puzzles. For me, they are a great way to practice mindfulness as I have to concentrate. I also love the feeling of achievement after finishing it which is an added bonus.

  • Spiky physio ball

I’ll use this while stretching and doing some easy yoga poses. I love it as a gentle way of moving my body and encouraging me to breathe a bit deeper. This self care strategy is perfect if I only have 5-10 minutes.

  • Face mask and nail polish

I’m definitely a lover of this stereotypical pamper self care. It’s something I enjoy being mindful with and feel refreshed after.

  • Magazines

The Breathe magazines are one of my favourite magazines. Not only are the articles informative and relaxing (with generally no diet talk), but the illustrations and layout is beautiful. The articles often include topics such as affirmations, mindfulness and self-compassion

  • Tea

Nothing calms me down like a hot drink and I’ve found that tea is definitely the best thing to help me relax.

Let me know in the comments what are some of your favourite ways to take care of yourself?
